Program Details
Day 1 Arrival – Hotel MadabaPick up and assistance at the airport and transfer to your hotel in Madaba for the first night.
Day 2 Madaba – Wadi RumThis morning we will take the expressway in direction to Aqaba to meet our Bedouin team in Wadi Rum. The south region of the Wadi Rum, also called the “white Wadi Rum” by the Bedouins - due to the clear colour of the massifs of sandstone - is a little visited sector where it is possible to see Bedouin campgrounds here and there. After the first picnic in the desert we start our walk following the ancestral tracks of tribes. Camping under stars. 2-3 h walking.
Day 3 Wadi RumStep by step the magic of the places grows. “The crags were capped in nests of domes, less hotly red than the body of the hill; rather grey and shallow. They gave the finishing semblance of Byzantine architecture to this irresistible place. This processional way greater than imagination….…vast, echoing and godlike. Our small caravan became aware of it and fell in a deadly silence, scared and ashamed to display its smallness in the presence of these wonderful hills.” (Lawrence of Arabia, Seven Pillars). Camping. 6-7 h walking.
Day 4 Wadi Rum - HumaymaBetween wadis, dunes and canyons ways to be explored are countless. We walk along these domes, canyons and sumptuous arks, where erosion made its work, up to the Djebel Qatar, before attaining Djebel Rum, in the form of pyramid. At the foot of Djebel Rum is the Bedouin village with the same name. Late in the afternoon, road transfer of about 45 minutes to see the ancient city Humayma, which was a small Nabatean settlement center founded from king Aretas in the first century BC. In the neighborhood we will settle our camp. 6-7 h walking.
Day 5 Humayma – Bir AmerLandscapes renew themselves continuously: deep wadis, red dunes of sand formed by winds, blocks of sandstones or crests in various colours. In the distance you can see the shape of Israel and the desert of Negev. Camping and overnight at Bir Amer. 6.7 h walking.
Day 6 Bir Amer - Djebel RajefCloser to Djebel Rajef the rose-red colours of the sandstone who makes the fame of Petra come to light. On our way we pass splendid abrupt canyons where still traces of edomite civilisation
(–1000 before Christ) can be seen. Discover the relics of an ancient edomite village, stuck at the top of a rock, accessible by a secret staircase. Camping at Djebel Rajef. 6-7 h walking.
Day 7 Djebel Rajef - Wadi Sabrah - PetraIt is in the Wadi Sabrah with its beautiful colours where we come closer to the first traces of the mythical city of Petra. Relics are numerous: temples, bridges, and especially a small Roman theatre. In front of us Djebel Haroun, or mount Hor in the Bible, with the grave of Aaron, the brother of Moses. A white mausoleum is established there and many pilgrims of three main monotheistic religions come there every year. Camping near Petra and Mount Haroun.
6-7 h walking.
Day 8 Petra - AmmanToday we explore Jordans most famous attraction: the rose-red Nabatean city of Petra and UNESCO world heritage. Much has been written about Petra, nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy monuments like the Treasury (El-Khazneh), the Roman-style theatre, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets.
Late afternoon we have to say good-bye to this grandiose site. We will drive you to your hotel in Amman for your last night in Jordan. 6-7 h walking.
